The history of how most works of art become known is clear to us: they originate in the artist’s studio, make their way to exhibitions, and find their audiences. However, Detached Involvement was all about works of art that did not become known in any conventional way. The pieces in this exhibition were only ever seen from the corner of the eye, or served as props and replicas.

This exhibition offered a view of the circumstances in which these objects and works of art were created, and the way in which their double life influenced their status. Objects considered lost and projects left unrealised; Detached Involvement was about the life cycle of a work of art.
